All people with SEND have the right to use public transport like people without SEND can. Transport should be safe, affordable and accessible.
At Barnet, want children and young people with SEND to:
be able to access all public transport services
get the support they need to use public transport
be able to afford public transport
feel safe and comfortable when using public transport.
There are many ways that you can get the right support when travelling which are detailed on the Mencap website.
You may be able to access subsidised (reduced cost or free) transport.

Getting to and from school
Most children and young people make their own way to school, accompanied by their parents or independently if they are older. For some children this may not be possible, either because their school is too far away or because they are not able to walk or use public transport in the same way as other children. In such cases, we may offer assistance with transport.
The local authority does not have a duty to provide free transport for young people that are of sixth form age for education or training. This means students aged 16 to 18. It also includes 19 year olds if they are continuing a course which they started before the age of 19.
Information on your rights for free SEN transport can be found on the contact website.
If you have an EHC Plan and think you may need support getting to and from school you can refer to the SEN Home to School Travel Assistance Policy for more information. Relevant application forms can be downloaded from this page.
If you're over 16 but under 25 years, please refer to the Policy and Arrangements for the Provision of Transport for 16-25 Year Olds to Access Appropriate Education and Training for further information and visit this page for application forms.
