Outline/Objectives:
ELSA is an evidence-based training programme for Barnet schools organised by the Educational Psychology Team (in collaboration with Barnet Virtual School).
ELSA is a programme which builds capacity within primary and secondary schools to support children and young people’s social and emotional needs. Support assistants are trained to deliver psychological interventions, usually over 6-12 weeks, to individuals and groups of children and young people. ELSA’s provide planned and focused interventions, providing young people with a safe space to understand and express their feelings, develop coping skills and build resilience.
ELSA supports a range of needs in children and young people, which may include;
• Low confidence & anxiety
• Bereavement, loss & trauma
• Limited understanding of emotions in themselves and others
• Emotional regulation needs
• Peer relationship difficulties
ELSAs attend a 6 day training, followed by half-termly supervision with an Educational Psychologist for 1 term.
Once completed ELSAs become fully registered with the national ELSA Network. SENCOs/Inclusion managers/senior leadership who will be overseeing the running of ELSA in school are required to attend a half day training session to help ensure the ELSA programme has the maximum impact in their school.
The programme will be run by the Barnet Educational Psychology Team.
